BASICS

Name: Sable Laelius
Journal: [personal profile] sable_knight
Nicknames/Alias: Just Sable
Face Claim: --
Age: 24
Species: Lustrallian
Class: Knight
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Predominantly heterosexual, but evolving
Date/Place of Birth: East Village, Lustrallis City, Lustrallis, Vincere
Currently: Roaming Vincere with his King and their party of companions
Occupation: Technically Sable remains a squire at the start of the story. However, it is worth noting that he has been a knight of the commons for a few years by the start of the story. When the Schorhyons invade Lustrallis, he is in the midst of squiring for a highly regarded knight of the prestigious Red Giant Guard, the sworn guardians of the crown.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Hair: Shoulder-length hair the color of cornsilk run through with streaks of watery blue
Eyes: A matching watery blue
Complexion: Pale cream
Height: Roughly 6 feet
Weight: Roughly 185 lbs of muscle
Build: Strong, muscled, broad-shouldered and firm
Style: Silver and pale blue Lustrallian armor over simple white linens, breeches, smallclothes, and a Lustrallian helm.
Scars: Plenty along his upper arms, the top of his right thigh, and down the length of his back in one long, diagonal line.
Other marks: Sable has an unfinished constellation of the Warrior etched into the full length of his body in pale silvery ink. This amounts to 9 white stars tattooed in the following places: 1 on the inside of each elbow, 1 on the outer curve of each shoulder, 1 around his navel, 1 upon each hipbone, and 1 upon each knee. He also has 4 stellaglyphs representing the sub-virtues of the Warrior (courage, patience, perseverance, persistence) tattooed in a line along a very intimate part of his body. In finished form, the constellation must be connected by a long silver string of ink so that each of these points is united. His remain unconnected as a representation of his squire status.
Accessories: A silver greatsword sheathed at his left hip, long enough that the tip of the scabbard nearly touches the floor when he walks. He should carry a walking stick, but he often uses his sword and scabbard in its place. Lastly, he wears a thin silver tie around his forehead thick enough to cover his eyes when pulled low.
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Sable is almost fully blind when not in combat. He is well-practiced at gazing at a fixed point above the sound of someone's voice when they are speaking to him, but when he is tired he prefers to pull the silver forehead tie down over his eyes to better relax.

HISTORY

Childhood/Family Life: Sable was born an only child to Rollal and Mariel Laelius. Though his parents were of modest means, by his own accounts he was spoiled as a child, carefree, and careless with his preliminary studies. He much preferred chasing his friends up and down the narrow and occasionally steep alleyways of the East Village to maintaining a perfect attendance record at school. That is, until he began to experience changes in the way he saw the world. Then he became decidedly less disobedient, more withdrawn, and, ultimately, far more angry.

The first warnings of his impending vision loss came at age 7 when he woke on a breezy mountain morning only to discover that the world seemed a little less colorful. His best childhood friend Lygren's skin appeared more grey than salty brown, which alarmed him to the point of tears - not for himself, but for his friend's health. Sable cites this day as the day he began to understand that something was happening to him rather than the world around him, though he does not cite this day as the day he accepted that it couldn't be fixed. That came several months, several new symptoms of his inherited degenerative eye disease, and several failed treatments, down the line.

By age 8 he was lost to the throes of near-complete vision loss, housebound due to an overly protective mother, and hopeless. He did not play, nor did he attend school, instead taking private lessons from one of the teachers who was generous enough with her time to teach him after school let out. He would not see most of his friends except for when he was forced to, and then he behaved in such a bitter fashion towards them that all were lost to him. All but Lygren, who remained stubborn and rude to him whenever Sable told him off, and very much a constant visitor and friend.

Eventually, Mariel gave in at his father's pressure and accepted that Sable still had a life to lead, albeit a different one. While Lygren went off to the Lustrallian squiring college, Sable began his own type of training alongside his private studies, and by age 10 he felt confident and comfortable in his usage of what Lygren insisted was the coolest walking stick he'd ever seen. He'd begun to feel somewhat at ease with this new version of himself, even if he still occasionally flew into a rage at his friend over their diverging paths in life. As littler ones they'd often talked of growing up to be Lustrallian knights, large and strong.

It was Lygren's idea to enroll at the squire's college, and one that Sable found to be incredibly stupid. Not only because he was no longer of the ideal age for entry, but because of his obvious disability. Still, Lygren primed him with stories he'd heard in the squire's college from the knights themselves, wonderful old tales of knights with assorted disabilities gained in battle still donning their armor in defense of the king.

Eventually, these fanciful stories became too painful for him, and he tearfully asked Lygren to stop telling him such silly things, to which his friend gravely complied. The idea wasn't spoken of again until his thirteenth year, and by then he'd already been adjusting to a life of fishmongering alongside his father down by the docks for some time.

Like most Lustrallians, his magic came upon him with the onset of puberty, though his experience was a rare and embarrassing one indeed. After a bit of experimenting with Lygren, he began to suspect he might have what it took to become an Astralescent Mage. If he could not become a knight, then if he could possibly achieve a different, but no less well-respected, rank of prestige, then it was certainly worth looking into. Somehow his mother managed to secure an audience with one of the sanctioned mages of Astralescent Tower, and he was found to be a prime candidate for astralescent tutelage.

It was there that he became aware of a possible path into the Red Giant Guard, a private kingsguard of arcane warriors.

Education: To become a Red Giant knight, one must also show a talent for solitary magic, the specialty of court-approved Astralescent Mages. Due to its rarity in Lustrallis (for common Lustrallian magic is almost always symbiotic in nature) Sable was given the chance to train for this elusive and esoteric path, which he gladly took. He was enrolled at the squire's college four years behind most other boys, while also receiving training at the Tower - a result that both surprised and upset the balance of his friendship with Lygren. He trained at the squire's college until the age of sixteen, whereupon he became the official squire to a knight named Cassel Bilayen until he achieved official knighthood status at age nineteen.

Naturally, his combined life of knighthood training and mage studies was not easy. Though he excelled in the astralescent path, he was at an extreme physical disadvantage due to his disability, and his trainers rarely saw fit to accommodate his needs until forced to. He bled quite a lot over the years, received quite a few injuries, and dated a few girls in his late teens who found him curiously appealing before falling in love with a sweet young girl named Atra. They dated, on and off, until he achieved full knighthood status, at which point he began to train more intensively to become a Red Giant.

Somewhere along the way Atra began to resent his single-minded nature, and broke up with him after claiming that she could not compete with the life he wanted. Lygren dated her for a bit, which resulted in a terrible rift between two who had already begun to grow apart due to Sable's talents. They remained rather distant, which turned out to be a lesson in and of itself for Sable, until the Scorhyons attacked.

Accomplishments: Sable cites becoming a knight and beginning to squire for Red Giant status to be among his greatest accomplishments, but he also rates adjusting to life as a blind young man to be pretty high up there too. However, becoming a knight means the world to him, as it represents, to him, his ability to achieve the impossible. Though, truthfully, he is not alone in this achievement. Plenty have come before him, though the last blind knight was twenty years his senior.

Regrets: Sable regrets not patching things up with Lygren or Atra before the Scorhyon attack. He also regrets not seeking out his mother and father during the attack, though he knows, realistically, he wouldn't have had the time to do so. He swore an oath to protect the king, and he believes in that oath, but he regrets not being able to know what happened to people he loves deeply. They haunt him at night, when it is his turn to take watch.

Secrets: It is not that he has secrets... only that he doesn't wish to speak of his personal life in the company of his new traveling party. His King, his King's Master, and a spy are not exactly good company for intensely personal conversation. He prefers to remain focused on the task at hand, which is to protect the King at all cost.

PERSONALITY

Personality Type (16 Personality Types): The Duty-Fulfiller

Archetype (12 Common Archetypes): The Hero

Virtues: Sable is incredibly mindful of doing his duty, intensely loyal, and just. As a Red Giant initiate, he aspires to the core four virtues of courage, patience, perseverance, and persistence, but he believes in so much more than that. If he is anything, it is that he aspires to be a very virtuous person, which can result in him appearing somewhat humorless, guarded, and morose at jokes made at the expense of others.

Vices: Anger and envy of Lygren's squire status drove many of his decisions as a child, but he strives to make up for such bad, selfish behavior by adhering to his duties as best he can. That has, however, resulted in him becoming quite prideful over the years. With each new obstacle surmounted, his pride grew that much more in size to the point where it became a knife in the midst of his dwindling friendship with Lygren that eventually severed what was left of them.

He is coming to understand that it is his pride that is at the root of this dissolution, along with why he seems unable to be the caring, romantic partner that a woman needs. He feels it was his pride that ultimately chased Atra away and eventually into Lygren's arms, but still he felt no desire to humble himself through the act of chasing her.

Likes & Dislikes: Sable absolutely despises jokes and japery at the expense of others, but this is part an overarching hatred of bullies and bullying behavior. At the start of the story he doesn't particularly like Dissarae, but he finds himself disappointed at his King's bullying behavior towards him, and torn over how to speak up. As a sworn knight he knows he should support Aven in all things, but as a person who experienced a lot of bullying at the hands of stronger people, it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth whenever it happens.

He also likes baked goods, and experiences a real concern that he could happily grow fat on Dionian food. Lustrallian food tends to be leaner, with less emphasis on cakes, but he can eat butter on bread every day for the rest of his life and remain a happy, sated man.

Dreams/Ambitions: Sable has two ambitions: 1) see his King firmly restored to his rightful throne and 2) achieve full Red Giant guard status. He very much wants to repair things with Lygren and Atra, as well as see his parents again, but right now he recognizes that these are dreams and little more for the time being. He cannot act on them, and it's very possible that he'll never be able to.

Quirks: Though he's proud of his current squire status, he doesn't want anyone to see the Warrior constellation on his body until it is fully connected. As such, he turns away when he is undressing and covers himself when startled or caught off guard.

Habits: He polishes his sword, meditates in solitude, and generally likes to be of use wherever he can be. He often cants his head when he is listening intently, and he is accustomed to tasting off things in order to get a better handle on them.

Fears: That the King will fall because he was not there to protect him. That they'll never be able to return home again. And, more selfishly, that he'll never find someone to spend a life with after he becomes a Red Giant knight and guardsman. Though arcane warriors are not forbidden from marrying or taking pleasure in orders, it is frowned upon within their circle to take partners and bear children if only because they risk their lives so often.

Sable would say he is selfish, however. He does not to spend the rest of his life alone.

RELATIONSHIPS

Parents: Rollal and Mariel Laelius, potentially deceased? He is not sure, but he has begun to mourn them in private, having assumed the worst.
Favourite sibling, sibling rivalry, twins? He is an only child
Children: None

Spouse: None
Current Partner: None
Ex-Partners: Atra
Boss/Employer: The King
Co-Workers: His fellow knights, both common and Red Giant guardsmen, though he does not know if many have survived the attack
Friends: He... would not consider Aven his friend - Aven is his king, and Lux is his king's master, but along the way he will begin to think of them all as his companions
Enemies: The Schorhyons responsible for invading his home

SUPERNATURAL/FANTASY

Weapon of Choice: A silver greatsword, two-handed, long and thick. He is proficient in other weapons as it is his duty to be able to fight with them, but he prefers the sword to all others.

Physical/Magical Strengths: Theoretically, Sable should be able to conduct magic for or receive magic from others through basic Lustrallian magic. However, just like anything else, this requires much practice to achieve proficiency, and he hasn't had much in that area.

He never dabbled in such magic with Atra because they never reached a prime level of intimacy in order to be able to sustain such a connection.

(Unique) Powers: As an arcane warrior he is capable of activating the stellaglyphs upon his body while in combat. This allows him to "see", faintly, the energies of his assailants.

He can track their movements with his normal senses, but he can also see their life's energy when his stellaglyphs are hot. They burn a bright orange beneath his armor, and his pupils glow orange as well. When he has exhausted his magical ability for a time, both his pupils and the stellaglyphs on his body fade back to their normal coloring.
